Grade 3 Art Lessons
December 09-March10
Dear Parents,
This is a list of lessons completed during the second trimester of school. Some 3-dimensional lessons have already been sent home while others are currently on display. One picture is being saved at school for our “End of the Year Art Show Mrs. Weir
Coil pots
The students reviewed the clay technique of making coils, and the use of slip which acts like glue and holds the clay together. They also learned the tricks for making the clay flair in or out to change shape. Pottery was bisque fired and glazed. Students were introduced to some Yarmouth history regarding clay, and where local potters' shops established in town.
Coil pots are posted on the 1st trimester web page.
Stenciling
The students brainstormed a variety of geometric and organic shapes which were also symmetrical, same on both sides. These shapes were then drawn and cut out of oak tag to create a stencil. They were introduced to the art form of stenciling by using a stencil brush and stamping acrylic paint through the opening of the stencil to make cards or writing paper.
Vocabulary: geometric/organic shapes, positive/negative space, symmetrical shapes, stencil brush, acrylic paints .

Have a Dream
The students talked about Martin Luther King and his dream. We then saw samples of past Olympic symbols and compared figure drawings done in an abstract style and realism. The students were given the task of drawing themselves doing an activity that they really liked, one that they thought they did well, or one that they hoped to do when they got older. They were encouraged to dream. They had a choice of drawing in the abstract form like many of the Olympic logos, or draw realistically.
Vocabulary: realism, abstract, figure drawing, ground line/horizon line
Impressionism (VanGogh) picture
The children learned about the life and art of Vincent Van Gogh and the Impressionistic Movement. They looked at his art, and studied the different styles that were used to create the work. The children then chose to either create their own, typical Van Gogh style picture or recreated one of Van Gogh’s original pictures.
Vocabulary: blending colors, building up layers, coloring softly, coloring hard, overlapping, horizon line/ floor line, variety/contrast, direction of lines.

Pointillism
The students learned about the art of Georges Seurat, who is best known for his pointillism pictures, pictures made from dots. The children experimented with either oil pastels or markers to create their own pointillism picture. The students were encouraged to blend colors, or to darken a shadow by adding more dots.
Vocabulary: pointillism, shadows, highlights
Value Paintings- Non Objective Designs and Realism
The purpose of this lesson was to introduce the students to the concept and skill of mixing values of one base color (lights and darks, tints and shades). The students first reviewed the concepts of symmetrical and asymmetrical designs, then applied their knowledge of values to paint a Realistic picture.
Vocabulary: base colors, tints, shades, symmetrical, asymmetrical, non-objective design, designs that explore line, color, shape.
