FEBRUARY
Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends,
The weather is unpredictable. In the same week, we can have children teasing to take their jackets off outside because it’s “sweating out here” and, then not take them outside because of the bitter cold. Please continue to send snowpants, hats, mittens and extra socks.
We fortunately have a smaller collection of LOST and FOUND, which is located by the office. Hats, mittens and gloves are displayed on a table for easier identification. Please remind your children to look for any missing items. Everything will go to a charity organization during February Break.
If you bring your children to school in the morning, please drop them by the main entrance of the building and not by the playground where the buses are pulling in to unload students. This has the potential to create a very dangerous situation.
Our 100th day of school is Wednesday, February 10th and we are well beyond our halfway point in the school year. Many of you may have had your second conference to see the academic, social and emotional progress of your children. If you do not have your conference scheduled at this time, please call your child’s teacher as soon as possible for an appointment. This is an important opportunity to talk with your child’s teacher to ensure that home and school are collaborating to give your child a successful experience.
In addition, you will be asked to complete teacher surveys. We realize these can be time consuming, however, urge you to take time to complete them. The feedback you provide is essential as it allows teachers to reflect and adjust their practices if needed. Thank you in advance for taking the time to thoughtfully complete and return any teacher surveys you may receive.
A survey about the HINI Vaccine Clinics was emailed to whether you participated or chose not to. Please take a few minutes to complete that to help us gather valuable data.
It is very early to mention this; however, some of you have already asked me about placement for the next school year. In May when we begin that process, those who know your students very well expend extraordinary amounts of time, care and thought, as it is essential that balanced groupings be created to provide equal opportunities for all students. We, therefore, do not honor specific placement requests. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
As the poor economic situation continues, once again, the school system’s budget is frozen. This means, among other things, that money is no longer available for field trips, which were planned at each grade level to enhance and enrich particular curricula units scheduled throughout the remainder of the year. The PTO has generously and graciously agreed again to pay for the transportation for the remaining trips and, in some situations, additional PTO funds were previously allocated for admission fees. We are grateful and deeply appreciative of our K-4 PTO members and to all of you who participate in various ways to support their important work.
Valentine’s Day is a favorite celebration for YES students and this year it falls during February break; however, the teachers will have a celebration for their classrooms during the week before vacation. Times will vary depending on teacher plans and grade levels so watch for communication home from classroom teachers.
THANK YOU to those of you who surprise us with the occasional treats placed in our Teachers’ Room. They are SO appreciated.
Skiing
I’m very good at skiing.
I have a kind of knack
For I can do it frontways
And also on my back.
And when I reach the bottom
I give a sudden flop
And dig myself in sideways
And that’s the way I stop.
